The Vatican's Gay Elite

In March of 2019, I shared an article on my Facebook page that had been published on the web page for the New York Magazine’s Intelligencer website. The headline was, “The Corruption of the Vatican’s Gay Elite Has Been Exposed”, by Andrew Sullivan.
As has been increasingly common these days, I found I could not share it on my Cybernetic Atheist page. For some odd reason, whenever I want to share an article critical of religion, especially the Catholic Church, on that page of mine, it fails. It is perfectly shareable on my OWN page, however, yet, strangely, I can’t even share it FROM my page to the Cybernetic Atheist page. But here it is for medium readers: Very strange. (But maybe that "censorship" Zuker talks about is one sided? Who knows?) That said, I want to talk about some points which occur to me after having read that article. But, in case you haven’t read it, please go to the New York Magazine, to The Intelligencer, and read that article. So, go ahead and read it, I’ll wait. Ok, finished? Good, let us proceed. It’s pretty astonishing, isn’t it? To think that an organization which is dedicated to the worship of a deity who has stated clearly in one of its most sacred writings (TWICE!) that the act of male on male sex is an “abomination” has been largely dedicated to creating its own private (sovereign!) Internationally recognized sex rings which has managed to fund itself in large part through both donations and investments of past donations covering the last 1700 years AND at the same time, manages to make the world think that they adhere to that deity’s forbiddance of that homosexual activity and are, in fact, opposed to it, is one of the most astonishing examples of a continuously operating con game mankind has ever seen. Now or in the past! Think about it for a moment. In TWO places, the Bible states that male on male sex is forbidden. It is sinful. This is a fact that the Church and most of its offshoots have vociferously and continuously proclaimed certainly since the early 20th century and has kept this in its most sacred dogma. In today’s world, in an obvious backlash to modern acceptance of homosexuality, it has doubled down on that teaching. And yet, according to the book reviewed in this article, “In the Closet of the Vatican: Power, Homosexuality, Hypocrisy”, by Frederic Martel, “As a secular gay journalist, not hostile to the church, he walked into the Vatican and was simply staggered by its obvious gayness. No gay neighborhood has existed like this in the West since the 1980s. (Lepore hazards a guess that 80 percent of the Vatican’s population is gay.) And as Martel probes deeper and deeper, one theme emerges very powerfully: “Homosexuality spreads the closer one gets to the holy of holies; there are more and more homosexuals as one rises through the Catholic hierarchy. The more vehemently opposed a cleric is to gays, the stronger his homophobic obsession, the more likely it is that he is insincere, and that his vehemence conceals something.” “ More: “The revelations keep coming, page after page. For example: Martel explains how two of John Paul II’s favorite cardinals — whose nicknames within the Vatican are Platinette (after a drag queen) and La Mongolfiera — set up an elaborate and elite prostitution service that continued through the papacy of Benedict XVI, and was financed from the Vatican coffers. We know this through police records from the eventual criminal proceedings, where the actual ringleaders remained anonymous and without charges, because of the Vatican’s diplomatic immunity. “ In short, the Vatican is an Internationally recognized, sovereign enclave, supported and financed by the donations of the faithful over the last 1700 years, whose denizens are among the elite and most powerful religious figures on the planet, and have used that power and those donations to finance the most elite and exclusive sex club humanity has ever known. One devoted to the exclusive worship of male homosexual sex in spite of the proclamation of that activity as sinful and forbidden by its own sacred writings, and by the teachings and writings of the very men who are the most complicit in that activity. The word hypocrisy is inadequate to define this situation in its entirety. One can only approach the fullness of understanding through combining synonyms — mendacious, sanctimonious duplicity comes a bit closer, perhaps. In an amazing revelation, the author regales the reader with more salacious details, but in the most incredible point I see in the whole of the revelations therein, he says: “Critically, Martel reaches the same conclusion I did recently — the omertà of the closet was a core reason for sex abuse. Gay priests felt unable to report pedophiles or abusers or hypocrites because they too could be outed by the abusers and forced out. There is no vast organized conspiracy. There is no “gay lobby.” There is a “honeycomb of closets,” often insulated from each other, built on deception and self-hatred, that amounts to a system where protecting the image of the church became far more important than saving children from rapists. “ And they expect their faithful to trust them with the “saving” of their very souls? How can people who are so broken, so corrupt and hypocritically duplicitous, end up saving anybody? Knowing these things, who among us should even dream of being able to trust these people’s word on anything? They tell us the very activity they have built their internal organizational structure around is forbidden and evil, yet, the society they build and protect at the cost of the abuse of innocents is more important than truthfulness and responsibility. The truth of their religious values, the stories they tell of their god, are all suspect. For how long has this gone on? The Roman Catholic Church is the oldest continuously operating bureaucracy on the planet. It has been in existence for all of 1694 years, arguably since 325, the year Constantine made it the official religion of the Roman Empire, and it began subverting that government from the inside. Of course, the actual history of that period isn’t clear, and their chief historian, Eusebius, isn’t known for his veracity and historical reliability. Nor can one imagine that such a group would admit in writing that they’ve done this for so long. Besides, the social attitudes of male on male sex is vastly different today than they were two thousand years ago. At the time, our definition of homosexuality wasn’t yet known, and male on male sex was, in fact, in Roman society and the Greek before them, fairly accepted as a way of life, although it wasn’t seen as a specific thing as we see it today. It was just another aspect of some people’s lives and wasn’t seen as a separate sexual preference. Our views on that have obviously changed. So, really, we don’t know how long this blatant sexual club thing has been going on in its current form. But the fact that it exists today concurrent with the very teachings that purport to outlaw it and does so at the VERY HIGHEST levels of the Church is damning at the least. The fact that it operates to prevent that organization from protecting the innocent from predators within its ranks is simply unacceptable. If this, the founding organization for Christianity, is this corrupt, how can we trust its teachings at all? How much more that they teach is untrustworthy? How can we trust people who lie to the faithful and have been doing that almost literally for centuries? That’s the question you must ask yourself, especially in today's climate as Trump & Co. come into office and owe something to the believers who helped elect him. Now, TRUMP himself, has no such loyalty, but some of his underlings may, so watch for it. Especially after the current revelations around sexual abuse of children. Hey, the RCC got there first folks, or did you forget? |
